Washington University School of Medicine is part of the larger community of Washington University, which has two campuses – the 169-acre Danforth Campus and the Medical Campus, which covers portions of 12 city blocks. The campuses are separated by Forest Park, a large urban park with many cultural and recreational attractions and the site of the 1904 World's Fair. The medical school also is part of Washington University Medical Center and an affiliate of BJC HealthCare System.

Washington University surgeons provide care – and train residents – at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Consistently rated as one of the best hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has a premier reputation in patient care, medical education, research and community service. The adjoining St. Louis Children’s Hospital is ranked as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals, providing care for children from infancy through adolescence.
