Research Opportunities

Many basic and clinical research opportunities are available at Washington University Medical Center. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded the School of Medicine $377.6 million in grants during the federal fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2005, making it the fourth-largest recipient of NIH dollars among U.S. medical schools. In fiscal year 2007, Department of Surgery researchers received more than $21 million in annual NIH, non-federal and corporate-supported grants.

The Department has approximately 61,000 square feet of laboratory space in three research buildings.

Fellows are encouraged to explore research opportunities in surgery, immunology, genetics and other fields of endeavor as well as to apply for extramural funding to support investigation into their own interests.
