Application Process
Thank you for your interest in the Plastic Surgery Training Program at Washington University in St. Louis. We will be offering advanced positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for the plastic surgery residency beginning July 2011. Information about registering for the NRMP can be found at http://www.nrmp.org/. The NRMP utilizes an electronic application service (ERAS). This is a separate service, which requires a separate fee. To register with ERAS, complete the form available at http://www.myeras.aamc.org/.
The Plastic Surgery Training Program at Washington University in St. Louis is an independent program as defined by the Plastic Surgery Residency Review Committee (see http://www.aacplasticsurgery.org/pathways.html). The program combines/coordinates three years of prerequisite training in general surgery followed by three years of plastic surgery training. The general surgery requirement must be completed through the General Surgery Residency Program at Washington University in St. Louis. You do not need to apply separately to the general surgery program. Washington University resident contracts are for one year only and are reissued each year contingent upon satisfactory completion of the prior year.
The Association of Academic Chairmen of Plastic Surgery has ruled and requires notification that residents accepted into an independent program are eligible to participate in the Plastic Surgery Matching Program (San Francisco Match) during their prerequisite general surgery training. This should be a very unusual action, as the outcome of the NRMP match should be lasting. It is the avowed intention of the resident and the program director that both adhere to the initial agreement.
An official evaluation of prerequisite training by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is required prior to the initiation of residency training in plastic surgery (i.e., during your third year of general surgery training). It is the responsibility of all prospective residents in plastic surgery to obtain this evaluation. Candidates may request this form on the Board’s website at http://www.abplsurg.org/. Each resident must obtain a Request for Evaluation of Training Form from the Board Office in the final year of their prerequisite training.
All graduate medical education programs at Washington University, including the Plastic Surgery Residency Program, are sponsored by the Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital/St. Louis Children's Hospital Graduate Medical Education Consortium known as the "GME Consortium." Please refer to the GME consortium website http://aladdin.wustl.edu/gme/gme.nsf/ for consortium policies regarding residency training.
