General Surgery After-Hours Review Sessions

Twice monthly, Surgery faculty members across all of the various specialties sponsor an “After Hours” education session. Each session is limited to 15 residents at either the junior or senior level. This provides an opportunity for a small-group format focusing on specific topics in General Surgery. The junior resident sessions are geared towards preparing residents to handle consults and understand the diagnostic workup and treatment modalities for the various surgical issues they will encounter at their next level of training. The senior resident sessions are formatted as “mock oral boards” sessions with faculty members from one of the sections acting as oral board examiners. All of the sessions are held in the evenings, either on site or at the faculty member’s house, and dinner is provided. These sessions have allowed the residents to interact with faculty in small groups in a setting that provides additional didactic training outside of the 80-hour work week.
