Oral Presentation of Clinical Information

The faculty feels very strongly that residents should be educated in how to teach, because they will instruct their patients, colleagues and nurses for the rest of their lives. The art of presenting a complex topic in a clear and coherent manner takes years of practice. Interns begin to learn this skill by presenting patients and leading 10-minute discussions of disease processes and patient management while on the Thoracic Surgery rotation at the weekly Thoracic Conference. Approximately twice a year during the research years through PGY4, house officers are assigned a topic they will present at General Surgery Conference. Residents work with an assigned faculty member to prepare a 30-minute PowerPoint slide presentation. The learning process culminates in a one-hour conference.
