Barnes-Jewish Hospital
Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the largest hospital in Missouri, is a result of the 1996 merger between Barnes Hospital and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. Rated by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best hospitals in the country, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has a premier reputation in patient care, medical education, research and community service. The hospital has more than 142,000 inpatient admissions and outpatient surgery and emergency department visits each year from patients around the world.
As an affiliated teaching hospital of Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has a 1,707-member medical staff that includes full-time academic faculty of the school, as well as private physicians. The medical staff is supported by a house staff of approximately 900 residents, interns and fellows, in addition to professional nurses and technicians, and service and support personnel. The hospital, which has 1,277 licensed beds, is a nonprofit institution and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The South Campus is the largest campus in the medical complex and the center of residency training for the Department of Surgery. Most of the surgical faculty offices are located within the South Campus, as are the surgical laboratories. All high-intensity, complex surgical cases, along with related care, are carried out at the South Campus, which includes the new emergency and trauma center.
Next to St. Louis Children's Hospital, and connected by covered walkways, is Barnes-Jewish Hospital, North Campus. Residents in the general surgery training program rotate through the North Campus, and full-time faculty members based there supervise their activities. Most outpatient clinics, diagnostic and testing services, as well as cancer services, are now located on the North Campus.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital
Adjoining Barnes-Jewish Hospital, South Campus, is the 250-bed
St. Louis Children's Hospital. Residents rotate through the Division of Pediatric Surgery here. The faculty offices and clinical services of the pediatric general surgeons and pediatric specialty surgeons also are located at the hospital.
As a pediatric teaching hospital, Children’s Hospital offers nationally recognized programs for training and research and is staffed by physicians who also are faculty members at Washington University School of Medicine. The hospital, ranked as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals, provides care for children from infancy through adolescence.
Founded in 1879, Children’s Hospital has since been at the forefront in pediatric medicine and clinical expertise. The medical and surgical staff of approximately 700 members includes specialists in all pediatric disciplines from more than 30 pediatric subspecialty departments and divisions. The medical staff works together in multidisciplinary teams to provide continuity of care to the patient. The hospital, which can accommodate children with every kind of medical need, serves not only children in St. Louis but throughout the world. Each year, about 275,000 patients visit the hospital, and it has served patients from all 50 states and 56 countries.

St. Louis VA Medical Center-John Cochran Division
The
St. Louis VA Medical Center-John Cochran Division is a 115-bed hospital located in midtown St. Louis just two miles from Washington University Medical Center. The VA Surgical Service includes general, vascular, thoracic, ENT, orthopedic, plastic surgery, ophthalmology and podiatry services. Approximately 3,500 surgical procedures are performed each year at the John Cochran Division. The Division has 10 operating rooms, facilities for laser therapy, a modern recovery suite and a 12-bed surgical intensive care unit. In addition, an MRI scanner and angiography suite facilitate the diagnosis and management of surgical patients. The VA Medical Center also has excellent laboratory facilities.
The service is fully integrated with the Washington University teaching program including clerkships for medical students. Supervision of residents is assisted by 28 faculty members and consultants from Washington University who are actively engaged in research and teaching. A full range of weekly conferences is held, including Morbidity and Mortality Conference, Cancer Multidisciplinary Conference and weekly resident administrative meetings.

Center for Advanced MedicineThe Center for Advanced Medicine opened its doors in Fall 2001 to a new way of caring for patients – multispecialty consultation, diagnostics, medical treatment, same-day surgery and support services, all in one convenient location – with the outstanding, innovative care patients have come to expect from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. At the Center for Advanced Medicine, health care professionals are constantly striving to pioneer techniques and pathways that will improve the care of patients. This building, located on the north campus of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, is a 645,000-square-foot facility where 17 medical and surgical specialties collaborate to provide the best in outpatient care.
Siteman Cancer Center
The $46-million Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center opened in 2001. This dedicated, state-of-the-art cancer care and research facility is part of the Center for Advanced Medicine. The Siteman Cancer Center is among the nation's highest ranking cancer research and treatment institutions with a designation by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
All outpatient cancer services, including physician practice areas, an infusion center, radiation therapy, a clinical research office and a Cancer Information Center, are available in this single location designed to enhance patient convenience and comfort. Its staff includes more than 300 affiliated Washington University researchers and physicians aided by 500 nursing, administrative and support staff. Last year, 6,000 new cancer patients were seen at the Medical Center. Faculty and staff at the Siteman Cancer Center also provided follow-up care for more than 28,000 cancer survivors and offered more than 350 clinical trials.

Charles F. Knight Emergency and Trauma Center
This building faces Forest Park and is nearly quadruple the size of the previous emergency room facilities. The 52,000-square-foot facility has a total of 61 beds divided into five patient care pods where specially trained physicians who are certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support provide specialized care. Washington University physicians also are actively involved in researching new techniques leading to improved care and recovery of the critically injured.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s trauma program has earned the distinction of Level I Trauma verification from the American College of Surgeons, the highest national recognition possible, and is the only trauma program in the St. Louis area to earn this prestigious honor.
