Written or telephone requests for information regarding our General Surgery residency training program are accepted.
We are exclusively utilizing ERAS® (Electronic Residency Application Service http://www.aamc.org/eras/resource/general/welcome.htm) for the upcoming application process. Please contact your medical school of graduation for ERAS® information and packet application. Paper applications will not be accepted.
A preliminary review of each applicant will be made upon receipt of a complete application and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The Dean’s letter is not required for initial review.
Applications should consist of all ERAS® materials and the following documents:

Three letters of recommendation from American Board of Surgery certified surgeons who are familiar with your work
USMLE Step I scores (Step II required before residency program starts)
Personal statement
We do not have a minimum score requirement (passage on the first attempt is required), but rather review your complete application considering all provided information. High scores and academic honors, however, do influence our Selection Committee.
If you are an international medical graduate, please contact your local Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) office for more information on ERAS®. Foreign medical graduates are required to have ECFMG certification before applying to our program. We sponsor only the J1 visa and we do not review applications of candidates who have been out of medical school more than 5 years.
Our application deadline is November 1, 2009. After the Selection Committee has reviewed your completed file, and if you are offered an interview, you will be contacted by e-mail to select a date for your interview. Please be sure to include your e-mail address as part of your ERAS® application.

There are several hotels in the area of Washington University Medical Center. The Parkway Hotel, St. Louis (www.theparkwayhotel.com) (314-256-7777 or 886-314-7700) is located adjacent to the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Medical Center. The Best Western Inn at the Park (www.bestwestern.com) (314-367-7500 or 800-373-7501) is located four blocks from the Medical Center. The Hyatt Regency (http://www.stlouis.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/) (314-231-1234 or 800-231-1234) is located at Union Station (a short ride from the Medical Center). These hotels are convenient to the Medical Center because they are accessible by Metrolink. Metrolink is a clean, efficient light-rail system, departing from the airport’s Main Terminal and East Terminal at 10-minute intervals. It takes approximately 20 minutes to ride from the airport to the Central West End Metrolink stop (where the Medical Center, Parkway Hotel and Best Western Inn at the Park are located). A further five minutes on the Metrolink will take you inside Union Station where the Hyatt Regency is located. As previously stated, the Medical Center is located at the Central West End stop. The Friday evening reception, held at the Eric P. Newman Education Center, is just one-half block south of the Metrolink exit.
The reception is an opportunity for applicants to meet the residents and the faculty informally. The interviews are held on Saturday morning. Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., chairman, Department of Surgery, will talk with the applicants during breakfast. Mary E. Klingensmith, M.D., program director, will present an overview of the training program as well as a description of the rotations. Afterwards, the applicants will attend General Surgery Conference. Following this, applicants will have several interviews over a 2 1/2-hour period.
At the conclusion of the interviews, applicants will be taken on a tour of the facilities including the hospitals and research buildings. A leisurely luncheon for the applicants, faculty and residents will follow the tour.
