Rotations
Residents rotate on clinical services for four- to eight-week blocks, depending on their clinical year. The operative cases on services with fellows are strictly separated by attendings to prevent any dilution of the residents' operative experiences. For example, the nine vascular surgery attendings are divided into four groups with one fellow or chief resident assigned to each group. Thus, all vascular cases done in the chief resident's group belong to the chief and not the fellows. In this way, the presence of a fellowship does not detract from the operative experience for the general surgery residents.
The call schedule operates on a night float system for general surgery services, ER, pediatric and thoracic surgery. Most residents who are not on night float take call on average either one in seven or one in 14 nights. Residents in the SICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, and the St. Louis VA Medical Center-John Cochran Division take call every third to fourth night. Call at Barnes-Jewish Hospital North Campus is from home. Chief residents take one to two weekend calls per month and take home call during the week. The call schedules are designed to comply with all aspects of the 80-hour work week regulations.
The rotations for 2009-2010 are shown below. The number in the columns represents the number of residents at this post-graduate year on the rotation.
