If you choose to participate, you would be assigned to one of the following groups:
Intensive Group – Participants in this group would receive print materials on diet and exercise and attend group sessions that would meet weekly for the first 4 months, then every 2 weeks for the next 2 months, and then monthly for the next 6 months over the course of one year. They also would receive 14-16 individualized telephone couseling sessions from a health coach over this time.
Less Intensive Group – Participants in this group will also receive printed materials on diet and exercise and two individual counseling sessions: one at the beginning of the study and another 6 months later. This group will be invited to group seminars every other month.
Participants in both groups would come to a clinic visit at the beginning of the trial and every 6 months thereafter for the next 2 years. This would include: 1) a fasting blood sample; 2) survey questions about your diet, exercise and quality of life; 3) a step-test to see how fit you are; and 4) measurements of your height, weight, waist and hip girth, and blood preasure.
All clinic visits will occur at the Center for Advanced Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Jewish Hospital. Initially, intervention groups will also be held at the Center for Advanced Medicine. Future sessions are planned for other locations west of Interstate 270.
