Neil Ermitano, DPM, Joins the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery

Neil Ermitano, DPM, joins the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis as an assistant professor of surgery.

Dr. Ermitano is a specialist in podiatric foot and ankle surgery. In his clinical practice, Dr. Ermitano has extensive experience in forefoot, rearfoot and trauma surgery. His expertise includes detecting and treating limb-threatening conditions, diabetic foot and wound care and treating trauma and infections. He was recruited from his former group practice where he had treated patients across the river in Belleville, O’Fallon and Staunton, IL since 2019.

Originally from Little Rock, AR, Dr. Ermitano earned his medical degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago in 2016. While he is a new face to Washington University, Dr. Ermitano is no stranger to St. Louis. In 2019, he completed his three-year residency in Forefoot and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery at DePaul Hospital St. Louis nearby in Bridgeton. During his residency, he additionally spent several months in rotation at Fort Leonard Wood Army Base, where he gained experience treating podiatric cases among members of the armed forces. Dr. Ermitano also completed a traveling fellowship internationally with the German Society of Foot and Ankle Surgery in different regions of Germany. During his time spent in Europe, he practiced at University Medical Center Gottingen, one of the largest and most prestigious university hospitals in Germany. Dr. Ermitano is both Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and Board Qualified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery in Forefoot and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery.

Dr. Ermitano joins the nationally recognized Acute and Critical Care Surgery team as a podiatrist specializing in wound care and limb preservation surgeries. Ermitano will see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital and at Christian Hospital in North St. Louis County. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a designated a Level I Trauma Center by the state of Missouri and the American College of Surgeons. This recognition is awarded to hospitals that provide only the highest level of total trauma care. The Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery also offers fellowship education and conducts research to advance and improve care for patients.

“The Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery is special in that it provides a very team based approach to patient care and treatment,” Dr. Ermitano says. “I look forward to joining the group and contributing to it’s already vast fund of knowledge and expertise to help serve the St. Louis area.”

Dr. Ermitano is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association. In addition to his extensive clinical experience, he has conducted research focusing on surgical treatment of disorders and injuries of the foot, ankle and lower extremity.
