2021 Annual Report for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery does essential, life-saving work for our patients at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where surgeons are shaping the future of surgery. To highlight the year’s accomplishments among our surgeons, are proud to share the 2021 Annual Report for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, which is now available online.

“While we have superb clinical facilities and a supportive environment for academic surgery, our greatest asset has always been and continues to be our faculty,” says Ralph J. Damiano, Jr., MD, the Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Evarts A. Graham Professor of Surgery in his Letter from the Chief. “We have a truly exceptional group of committed and talented individuals who work together closely as a team.” Surgeons see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and Christian Hospital locations and community hospitals in St. Louis County and beyond.

The physicians responsible for Cardiac, Thoracic and Pediatric Cardiothoracic surgery each have their own specializations and achievements through the year of 2021. Each section of the division is featured alongside their distinguished clinical work, research, funding, publications and education alongside stellar faculty. The division elevates its clinical and research programs with a dedication to the highest quality and innovative care for patients in the region, as well as incredible educational opportunities for fellows.

The 2021 Annual Report for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery features stories from each section, updates on research and funding, introduces new faculty, highlights leadership, and provides a timeline of milestones from the past year. It condenses the many triumphs and new objectives of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery as we move forward to cover new ground and provide our patients with the care they need.
