Meet Dr. Odeny 

Dr. Beryne Odeny is a physician-scientist with over 15 years’ experience in global public health and population sciences, and a passionate health promotion advocate.

She is an assistant professor of surgery at the Division of Public Health Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. She leads disparities research focused on lung cancer screening, cardiovascular disease prevention, and the integration of routine screening among high-risk smoking populations. Her work utilizes a variety of research methods, including quasi-experimental designs, qualitative studies, mixed methods approaches, and community engagement.

Dr. Odeny earned her medical degree from the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and her MPH and PhD in Implementation Science from the University of Washington, Seattle. She also is an author and academic editor with a long record of peer-reviewed publications, and hads has made significant contributions to the global publishing industry. Recently, she received recognition and funding for her work in healthcare access and her continued efforts to improve public health outcomes through innovative research.

I am deeply committed to understanding and addressing population-level gaps in access to healthcare by leveraging the tools of implementation science. I collaborate with healthcare providers, patients, and health systems to develop and implement strategies that promote healthcare access and utilization. My research initiatives aim to transform both local and global healthcare by ensuring the practical application of health discoveries to achieve tangible improvements in people’s everyday lives.

Research interests

Dr. Odeny’s research focuses on the use of observational data from national health information systems to investigate inequities in healthcare access and health outcome disparities, particularly among marginalized populations in low resource settings.
