
Brad Warner, MD, was honored posthumously by the Society of University Surgeons (SUS) with the Presidential Citation Award. Barbara Warner, MD, accepted the award on his behalf. The recognition was presented at the annual Academic Surgical Congress meeting, which took place from February 3 to 5 in Orlando, Fl.
Warner served as president of SUS in 2003-2004 before assuming his role as director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and surgeon in chief of St. Louis Children’s Hospital. His presence in the surgical education sphere was additionally marked for his internationally recognized research program. His research in the area of adaptation to massive small bowel resection has advanced our understanding of short gut syndrome. As chief, he took surgery at SLCH to a new level by recruiting talented faculty and building clinical programs in areas of greatest need for our community.

Warner joined the Department of Surgery at WashU Medicine in 2007 as director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and surgeon-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He was the Jessie L. Ternberg, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Pediatric Surgery. He served as director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery until 2023. He remained on faculty, continuing to care for patients and mentor trainees after turning over the division leadership to Colin Martin, MD.
