Advancing care for critically ill and injured patients
The Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery at WashU Medicine is focused on caring for critically ill and injured patients. Established over 25 years ago as part of the Division of General Surgery, our section excels in emergency surgical care, training and research.
Our focus on patient care is multifaceted. We specialize in the treatment of traumatic injuries, emergency surgeries, geriatric trauma, general surgery, burn and wound care, and critical care. Highlights of our clinical program include:
- Regional referral center for critically ill patients
- Level I Trauma Center designation by the State of Missouri
- Level I verification from the American College of Surgeons
Research from our section aims to improve quality and outcomes of care—including reducing trauma rates, infections, blood loss, and other critical areas of investigation.
The section trains future surgeons through the general surgery residency and two fellowship programs. In recent years, members of our section have been recognized for their excellence and dedication to surgical training.
