Augusto Zani, MD, PhD, a neonatal and pediatric surgeon-scientist, joins the Division of Pediatric Surgery as a professor of surgery. Zani joins WashU Medicine from Toronto, where he has contributed to international research in pediatric surgery, having published hundreds of studies.
As a prolific researcher, Zani has served in leadership roles at national and international professional organizations, served as judge in research presentation competitions and currently serves as associate editor for the Journal of Extracellular Biology, Frontiers in Pediatric Surgery and others. Zani has also received 16 research grants as principal applicant from international organizations in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom, such as the American Pediatric Surgical Association Foundation.

His wealth of expertise and collaborative scientist spirit will be at home in our division.”
Zani earned his medical degree with distinction from Sapienza University of Rome, in Italy in 1995. He completed his training in surgery in 2006 at Sapienza University of Rome. Zani earned his doctorate in paediatric surgery from the Institute of Child Health at University College of London. In 2015 Zani completed fellowship training for translational medicine in paediatric surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
