Department of Surgery New Faculty: August 2023

This August, the Department of Surgery welcomes six new faculty members to the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery, the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Section of Transplant Surgery and the Division of Urologic Surgery and congratulates two faculty members on promotions within the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery.

August New Faculty

Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery

The Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery welcomes Nicholas Welko, MD, MS, to a one-year appointment as an instructor of surgery. Welko earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2017. He completed his general surgery residency at University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2022 and recently completed his Surgical Critical Care fellowship at Washington University earlier this year. His research interests include directed peritoneal resuscitation in damage control laparotomies and massive transfusion. Welko is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and holds a number of professional memberships, including the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons. He will see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Christian Hospital.

The department also congratulates Patrick Craft, DO, and Rami Al-Aref, MD, on promotions from instructors to assistant professors of surgery. Craft completed his surgical critical care fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and joined the Section of Acute and Critical Care last summer, specializes in acute and critical care surgery and sees patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Christian Hospital. Al-Aref completed his surgical critical care fellowship at Washington University in 2022, specializes in trauma, emergency general surgery, robotic surgery, and critical care surgery. He sees patients at a number of locations, including Alton Memorial Hospital, Barnes-Jewish and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospitals, Chrisitan Hospital, Missouri Baptist Medical Center and Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, Memorial Hospitals Bellville and Shihloh, Parkland Health Center, and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery

William Chapman Jr., MD, MPHS, joins the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery as an assistant professor of surgery. Chapman earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington DC in 2015. At Washington University, Chapman both earned his MPHS in 2018 and completed his general surgery residency in 2022. He recently completed a colon and rectal fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. His research interests include rectal cancer, colon cancer and patient reported outcomes in colorectal surgery. Chapman is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is board eligible with the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He will see patients at several locations, including Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, The Center for Advanced Medicine, The Center for Advanced Medicine in South County and Siteman Cancer Center.

Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery

Mathieu Garand, PhD, joins the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery as an instructor of surgery. Garand earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in biochemistry from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He also completed postdoctoral fellowships at University of Windsor and Children’s Hospital Research Institute at University of British Columbia. Garand’s research focuses on improving prevention and treatments for immunopathology and infectious diseases in neonates and young adults, pathogenesis of congenital heart disease, and the relationship between viral infection and congenital heart disease.

Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Saif Badran, MD, PhD, joins the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as an assistant professor of surgery. Originally from Jordan, Badran earned his medical degree from University of Jordan School of Medicine in Amman in 2015. He started his training at Jordan Hospital and Medical Center and went on to complete his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, Qatar, in 2022. In 2023, he earned his PhD from Qatar University School of Medicine and completed his microsurgery fellowship at Washington University. His research interests lie in mechanic studies underpinning the link between obesity, insulin resistance, inflammation and adipocyte dysfunction. Badran will see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the Center for Advanced Medicine, Christian Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Section of Transplant Surgery

The Section of Transplant Surgery welcomes Gregory Martens, MD, PhD, as an assistant professor of surgery. Martens earned his medical degree in 2012 and completed his general surgery residency in 2014 at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He earned his PhD in 2014 and completed additional general surgery residency training in 2021 at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Martens’ research interests include xenotransplantation and normothermic machine perfusion, histocompatibility and xenotransplantation, b-cell depletion therapies, and cDNA microarray analysis of apoptosis in human t-cells. He is a member of a number of professional organizations and societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Transplantation Surgeons, the Transplantation Society, the International Xenotransplantation Association and the American Medical Association. Martens will see pateints at the Center for Advanced Medicine.

Division of Urologic Surgery

Charles Jones, MD, joins the Division of Urologic Surgery as an assistant professor of surgery. In 2017, Jones earned his medical degree from University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia and went on to complete his urology residency at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City in 2022. He recently completed a fellowship in male genitourinary reconstruction and trauma at University of California in San Francisco earlier this year. He is a member of the American Urologic Association and his professional interests include resident and medical student education, improvement in patient care pathways, urologic reconstruction and minimally invasive surgery. Jones will see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

The Department of Surgery welcomes Dr. Welko to the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery, Dr. Chapman to the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Dr. Garand to the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Badran to the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Martens to the Section of Transplant Surgery, and Dr. Jones to the Division of Urologic Surgery and congratulates Drs. Craft and Al-Aref on their promotions.
