This May, the Department of Surgery welcomes Beryne Odeny, MD, MPH, PhD to the Division of Public Health Sciences as an assistant professor.
Odeny earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Nairobi in Nairobi, Kenya in 2006. In 2014, she earned her MPH in Global Health from the University of Washington in Seattle, where she also recently earned her PhD in Dissemination and Implementation Science in December of 2022. Odeny previously served as a research coordinator in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington in Seattle. She has served as associate editor of PLOS Medicine since July 2020. Her extensive experience includes conducting research and running programs focused on HIV/TB, maternal child health and adolescent health in HIV. She is a member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, the International AIDS Society, the Council of Science Editors, and the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals and is the recipient of a number of awards and scholarships from organizations including the 8th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogensis, Treatment and Prevention in Vancouver, Canada in 2015, the 23rd International AIDS Conference in 2020, and the 2021 Council of Science Editors in 2021.
