Elke Zani-Ruttenstock, MD, Joins Division of Pediatric Surgery

Elke Zani-Ruttenstock, MD, a stem cell therapy researcher and pediatric surgery specialist, joins the Division of Pediatric Surgery as an assistant professor. She has dedicated her career to pediatric surgical care, having collaborated with colleagues to publish chapters in books for diagnostic advice in areas such as pediatric gastroenterology and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

“I am thrilled that we were able to recruit Dr. Elke Zani-Ruttenstock to join our division,” says Colin Martin, MD, chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery, who serves as the Brad and Barbara Warner Endowed Professor of Surgery and surgeon-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “Dr. Zani-Ruttenstock brings outstanding expertise with her extensive and comprehensive training in pediatric surgery, particularly in colorectal care. She will lead a multidisciplinary colorectal program, significantly advancing our capabilities in this crucial area. In addition, she also has experience in education and coaching. Both of these skills will significantly enhance the learning environment for our students and trainees.”

Zani-Ruttenstock earned her medical degree and completed pediatric surgery residency at the Medical University of Graz, in Graz, Austria. She has completed additional clinical training in pediatric hepatobiliary surgery, neonatal surgery, pediatric trauma and pediatric general and thoracic surgery. Zani-Ruttenstock has also completed several international research and translational medicine fellowships, and in 2023 she completed certification as a certified professional career coach. She joins WashU Medicine after serving in clinical and research roles at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.
