Division of General Surgery Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery New Faculty

New faculty join Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery: August 2025

In August, the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery welcomed five new surgeons to the faculty. Stephanie Armocida, MD, Sara Matsumoto, MD, Daniel Hafenrichter, MD, and Alison Karadjoff, DO, are all due to join the trauma service on August 1. Chelsea Thampy, MD, will join the faculty on August 4.

Armocida earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 2018. She pursued a research fellowship and clinical investigation certification at Johns Hopkins in 2021-2022, before completing general surgery residency training at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 2024. During her fellowship at Johns Hopkins, Armocida participated in the CLOTT-3 multi-center study, which is ongoing.

Matsumoto earned her medical degree at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She completed general surgery residency training at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York in 2024.

Hafenrichter joined the faculty at WashU Medicine, having been in practice at Missouri Baptist Medical Center since 2023. Hafenrichter earned his medical degree at WashU Medicine in 1989, later completing general surgery residency training in 1997. He completed research fellowship training at WashU Medicine in 1994.

Karadjoff earned her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan in 2019. She completed general surgery residency training at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan in 2024. Karadjoff has certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET). She is also an instructor in ATLS and Stop the Bleed courses.

Thampy earned her medical degree at Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine in 2019. She completed general surgery residency training at Henry Ford St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 2024. She completed surgical critical care fellowship training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan before joining the faculty at WashU Medicine.

Armocida and Matsumoto are completing surgical critical care/acute care surgery fellowship training at WashU Medicine.
