What is thoracic outlet syndrome?

Thoracic outlet syndrome (sometimes shortened to TOS) is an uncommon medical condition that occurs when the nerves or blood vessels between the neck and shoulder are compressed.

Symptoms can include pain, numbness and tingling, and weakness in the affected areas.

TOS can be caused by congenital differences that you are born with, injuries and trauma, or repetitive movements.

Types of thoracic outlet syndrome

There are three main types of thoracic outlet syndrome. Symptoms and treatment options often depend on the type of TOS.

Arterial Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare form of TOS that occurs when the subclavian artery is compressed, leading to compromised blood flow to the arm.

Neurogenic Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition involving the compression of the brachial plexus, a network of nerves responsible for transmitting signals from the spinal cord to the shoulder, arm, and hand.

Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Venous thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition that occurs when the subclavian vein is compressed, leading to obstruction of blood flow from the arm to the heart.
