Excellence in cancer care

The Section of Surgical Oncology at WashU Medicine is a national leader in cancer care, research and education. As part of the Division of General Surgery, the section has a rich history of significant contributions to the fields of endocrine and oncologic surgery—from early discoveries in multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) led by Samuel Wells Jr., MD, and Jeffrey Moley, MD, to the latest advances in neoantigen cancer vaccine development.

Our surgeons provide the most advanced care for diseases of the breast and endocrine system, as well as melanoma, sarcoma, and other cancers. As partners with Siteman Cancer Center, our cancer program is consistently ranked among the nation’s best. Highlights of our program include:

  • Comprehensive Cancer Center designation and “Exceptional” rating from National Cancer Institute – Siteman Cancer Center
  • One of the highest-volume endocrine surgery practices in the country, with experts in adrenal, thyroid, and parathyroid diseases
  • Breast cancer care including sentinel node mapping, brachytherapy, ductoscopy, breast-conserving procedures, and a team of breast reconstruction surgeons

Research in our section focuses on developing novel strategies for treating cancer and endocrine disorders. Our investigators are involved in clinical trials, genetic and multi-omic studies, and basic and translational research to further our understanding of oncologic problems and improve care for patients.

We train general surgery residents rotating on our service, offer a T32 surgical oncology training program, and offer a one-year breast oncology fellowship. Fellows gain operative experience in a high-volume, comprehensive cancer center for diseases of the breast. The fellowship also offers significant opportunities for research
