With another year in the books, we are proud to share the Department of Surgery 2021 Annual Report, demonstrating our mission in action. You can read the Annual Report online to learn how the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has continued its leadership in patient care, research, education and health equity in a year of challenges and successes.
“As academic surgeons, we spend a great deal of our time taking care of patients, performing research and developing innovative educational programs,” writes Timothy Eberlein, MD, the William K. Bixby Professor & Chair of the Department of Surgery, Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor and Director of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, in his Letter from the Chair. “I would suggest that all of us in the Department of Surgery actually have a fourth mission: to improve the diversity of our specialty as well as to improve the health equity of all the patients we serve.”
The Department of Surgery is a multidisciplinary and collaborative organization in which faculty, staff, residents and fellows from various specialties work together to achieve excellence in all our organization’s missions. The department’s surgeons provide expert care within five divisions—General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Urologic Surgery—each of which provides expert diagnostic and treatment options alongside research programs highlighted in the Annual Report. Surgeons see patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center locations and community hospitals in St. Louis County and beyond.
The Public Health Sciences division further expands the research, education and outreach of our institution. The division contributes to our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion with three goals: preventing disease, promoting health, and improving quality and access to health care in the region.
Clinical and research faculty in the department train residents and fellows in each of our surgical specialty divisions. In its ongoing research programs, the Department of Surgery consistently ranks among the top academic surgery departments in annual NIH, non-federal and corporate-supported grants.
The 2021 Annual Report features stories from each division and section, updates on research and funding, introduces new faculty, highlights leadership, and provides a timeline of milestones from the past year. It condenses the many triumphs and new objectives of our department as we move forward to cover new ground and provide our patients with the care they need.
