Martin Named President-Elect of SUS

Colin Martin, MD, chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, was named president-elect of the Society of University Surgeons (SUS).

As president-elect, Martin will assume the presidency in 2026 and will lead the organization, whose mission is to promote excellence and leadership in academic surgery. His term as the 87th SUS president begins in 2026.

“It is an incredible honor to be elected by my colleagues across the nation to serve as president,” says Martin, who is the Drs. Brad and Barbara Warner Endowed Professor of Surgery at WashU Medicine. “I look forward to continuing the society’s longstanding tradition of excellence in the surgical sciences. Thank you to my fellow members for giving me this opportunity to serve.”

Martin, an accomplished pediatric surgeon-scientist and surgeon-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, has held multiple leadership positions in the SUS, including chair of the Membership Committee and membership of the SUS Executive Council.

“Colin Martin is a remarkable leader in academic surgery whose contributions have helped shape the next chapter of our pediatric surgery program at WashU Medicine,” says John A. Olson Jr., MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Surgery and William K. Bixby Professor. “As president of the SUS, I know Dr. Martin will play a pivotal role in advancing our field at the national level. He is a consummate academic surgeon, devoted to providing the very best patient care, pioneering research and educating future leaders in surgery.”

Martin notes that the history of leaders in national and international organizations at WashU Medicine creates an environment wherein faculty are encouraged to pursue such distinctions.

“We are fortunate to be at an institution that has produced so many of the key figures in academic surgery,” says Martin. “I am honored to work alongside such distinguished colleagues.”
