The 30th Annual Refresher Course & Update in General Surgery offers medical professionals unique opportunities to increase their knowledge on a multitude of topics within general surgery, examine new cutting-edge techniques, technologies and concepts in surgical science, and collaborate and network with other general and specialty surgeons, physicians and nurses. This three-day event, organized by Washington University School of Medicine and Continuing Medical Education, runs from Thursday, Feb. 23 through Saturday, Feb. 30 and will be hosted at Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis, MO.
The course is dedicated to providing access to information and training in the latest surgical techniques and innovative procedures in general surgery today. Led by course chairs Jeffrey Blatnik, MD, and Maria B. Majella Doyle, MD, MBA, the course will cover topics focused on decision-making, innovative practices, and new developments in surgical oncology, hernia, breast, colorectal, and trauma & acute care surgery. Other sessions throughout will include a range of activities, including debate sessions, ethics and legal education and discussion, and video presentations of procedures performed by top-of-the-line specialists. Each section of the comprehensive course will include a panel discussion and a Q&A session to provide audience involvement opportunities.
Two optional activities will take place before the kickoff of the Refresher Course on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Eric P. Newman Education Center within Washington University Medical Center. The 2023 Eugene M. Bricker Visiting Lecture in Surgery will be delivered by Liane S. Feldman, AB, MD CM, the Edward W. Archibald Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at McGill University, from 7-8am. An additional hernia surgery course, Evidence-Based Management of Abdominal Wall Hernias, will take place from 8am-4:30pm. These optional activities require separate enrollment from the Refresher Course. The visiting lecture is complimentary; tickets for the optional hernia course are $375 and require enrollment in the Refresher Course as a pre-requisite.
The Annual Refresher Course and Update provides an opportunity to earn American Board of Surgery Maintenance of Certification self-assessment credits and Interprofessional Continuing Education credits. The daily case panel discussions are approved for American Medical Association PRA Category 1 Credits and American Nursing Credentialing Center Association contact hours.
Online registration is currently open and will close at 12pm CST on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Through Tuesday, Feb. 14, tickets are $550 for physicians and $450 for residents and fellows. Prices increase after Feb. 14 and maximum enrollments have been established, so early registration is encouraged.
