Robert MacGregor, MD, a surgeon with expertise in benign foregut surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction, joins the Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery as an assistant professor of surgery, effective September 1.
MacGregor specializes in both open and minimally invasive approaches—including robotic and laparoscopic surgery—for diaphragmatic and abdominal wall hernias, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and gallbladder conditions, as well as endoscopic surgery for swallowing disorders of the esophagus.
“We are excited for Dr. MacGregor to continue his career as a faculty member at WashU Medicine,” says Jeffrey Blatnik, MD, chief of the Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery. “We have seen him progress through surgical residency and most recently minimally invasive surgery and know that the success he has achieved up to this point will only continue moving forward. His interests in abdominal wall hernia repair and foregut surgery will continue to expand our clinical offerings to patients.”
MacGregor earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. He completed general surgery residency training and an advanced GI/minimally invasive surgery fellowship, both at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
During his surgical training, MacGregor received numerous awards for his contributions to research and surgical education, including resident teaching awards in 2021-2023 and the 2023 Eugene M. Bricker, MD Teaching Award from the Department of Surgery at WashU Medicine.
“I look forward to joining a group of surgeons in the WashU MIS section who have a longstanding tradition of clinical and educational excellence. I will continue to strive to advance patient-centered surgical care for benign foregut disease and abdominal wall hernias. I also look forward to contributing to the education of our surgery residents and fellows,” says MacGregor.
The Department of Surgery welcomes Robert MacGregor, MD, to the Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery.
