Five surgeons from the Department of Surgery at WashU Medicine have been named in Newsweek’s 2025 list of “America’s Leading Doctors.”
Surgeons who received the recognition include:
Colorectal surgery
- Steven Hunt, MD
- Lawrence Mendelow, MD
- Mattew Mutch, MD
Vascular surgery
- Brent Allen, MD
- Luis Sanchez, MD
The media company compiled the list in partnership with data firm Statista, Inc., based on Medicare data, recommendations from experts in the field, quality assessments, and other data sources. The list was published online July 30 and printed in Newsweek’s magazine the week of Aug. 15.
“Being listed among America’s leading doctors reinforces that our surgeons are of the highest order,” said John A. Olson Jr., MD, PhD, the William K. Bixby Professor of Surgery and chair of the Department of Surgery at WashU Medicine.
In an article announcing the list of leading doctors, Newsweek noted that “navigating options for a high-stakes procedure can be overwhelming, especially those facing time-sensitive or life-altering decisions.”
In addition to having surgeons ranked among the nation’s best, surgeons at WashU Medicine are consistently recognized among the best in St. Louis and the region by Castle Connolly, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are ranked as the top hospitals in St. Louis and Missouri by U.S. News & World Report, and Siteman Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Missouri and southern Illinois.
