Taylor Brown, MD, MHS, and William Gillanders, MD, both endocrine surgeons at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, received Focused Practice Designations in adult complex thyroid and parathyroid surgery from the American Board of Surgery.
The Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Focused Practice Designation recognizes surgeons who dedicate a significant percentage of their practice to the care of patients with benign or malignant and functional or non-functional tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
Dr. Brown is an endocrine surgeon specializing in surgery for adrenal, parathyroid and thyroid diseases. He earned his medical degree from University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Brown completed general surgery residency training and an endocrine surgery fellowship, both at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT. He leads research to improve treatment options for people with endocrine tumors and cancers as part of the Endocrine Neoplasia Research Group at WashU Medicine.
“This designation is a reflection of the work our team does at WashU Medicine,” Dr. Brown said. “We perform hundreds of thyroid and parathyroid operations each year. Having surgeons dedicated to this specialty allows us to provide compassionate, individualized care.”
Dr. Gillanders is an endocrine surgeon with over 25 years of experience treating tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, as well as other forms of cancer. He earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Gillanders completed general surgery residency training and a surgical oncology research fellowship, both at WashU Medicine.
“It is an honor to be recognized for our specialization in adult complex thyroid and parathyroid surgery,” said Dr. Gillanders, who is the Mary Culver Professor of Surgery at WashU Medicine. “This designation lets patients know that we dedicate our practice to comprehensive care for endocrine tumors. Finding an expert surgeon is challenging. I hope this designation will help patients make informed decisions about their care.”
Focused Practice Designation is a designation that recognizes surgeons who have focused their practice on one particular aspect of a given field of surgery that is not already recognized by specialty or subspecialty certification.
